Mana Interaction
Also known as: Raw Manipulation, Field Adjustment, or Direct Channelling
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Mana Interaction is the direct manipulation of raw magical energy—mana itself—without channelling it through an elemental or affinity-based medium. Casters shape or redirect ambient and personal mana to produce tangible effects on physical or magical matter.
Every being is born with an affinity (Light or Darkness) and a primary element (Fire, Water, Air, or Earth), which determine their natural magical pathways. Mana Interaction does not rely on any of these alignments but instead functions through the caster’s aura, momentarily influencing the balance of forces in the surrounding environment.
Unlike elemental magic, which requires attunement to a specific natural force, Mana Interaction manipulates pressure, balance, and motion directly. Its accessibility and instinctive nature make it the foundation of magical education—children often display minor forms before ever learning their elemental focus. While weak, its application availability across both affinities and all elements make it very versatile.
Applications:
Spells derived from mana interaction generally alter force, motion, or equilibrium rather than creating or transforming matter. Common examples include:
-
Levitation: suspending or stabilizing objects
-
Telekinesis: guiding objects along a controlled path
-
Repulsion / Attraction: applying small push or pull forces
-
Aura Sense: feeling someone else's presence nearby through disturbance of the natural magic flow
Limitations:
Effectiveness scales with mana reserves and precision. Large-scale or prolonged use is draining, and emotional instability may disrupt control. Mana Interaction cannot replicate elemental properties.
Scholarly Theories:
Considered pre-elemental, Mana Interaction represents a universal baseline from which all elemental and affinity-based magic emerges. It bridges innate ability and elemental mastery and is often the first discipline taught to apprentices.
Aura
Also known as: Mana Field
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
An aura is the personal mana field generated by every living being capable of magic. It forms a constant, living boundary between the individual and the surrounding environment, shaped by the flow and resonance of their mana. While usually unnoticed, the aura is the foundation through which all Mana Interaction techniques operate.
The aura responds directly to intent and focus. Through conscious control, a mage may align, reinforce, or adjust their aura to influence nearby forces and mana fields. Unlike elemental or affinity-based magic, aura use does not shape mana into spells; instead, it alters balance, pressure, and resonance within the immediate environment.
The aura is flexible rather than fixed. It can be extended, thinned, or reshaped within a limited range, allowing interaction with distant matter or other mana fields without physical contact. Techniques such as levitation, telekinesis, and telepathic resonance rely on controlled aura extension. As the aura stretches farther from the body, it becomes increasingly diffuse and demanding to maintain.
The aura remains bound to its bearer’s living mana. Severe fatigue, injury, or disrupted mana flow can weaken its cohesion, limiting effective range and sensitivity. When a being dies, the aura collapses along with their living mana and cannot be accessed or replicated.
Aura Disciplines
There are four main skills to learn that concern one's own aura in particular. Each of them is recommended for the student level and belongs to the basics in any magical training.
These four disciplines are:
*For rootkin and chimeras, the recommended level for this technique is Student. For demonkin and faekin, it drops to Novice due to their stronger mana fields and greater mana reserves.
Aura Sense
Also known as: Aura Perception or Mana Sense
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Recommended Level: Student
An application that allows the caster to detect disturbances in the ambient mana that is in constant contact with their own aura. Similar to an intuitive sense of presence, this technique registers when something disrupts the natural flow of mana, most commonly another living aura.
Because ambient mana itself serves as the conduit, the caster does not need to extend their own aura to perceive others. The technique instead relies on sensitivity to shifts in resonance and flow as they occur around the caster.
Aura Sense functions as a passive skill and can be learned early, often practised as a basic exercise. At this stage, it typically registers only vague impressions of presence or movement. With refinement, the caster may distinguish direction, intensity, and individual mana signatures.
While primarily used to detect other individuals, the technique can also register artificial disturbances caused by enchantments or active magic. These are usually weaker and less distinct, requiring greater attention to identify reliably.
Limitations:
-
Artificial or other kinds of weak disturbances require active focus to detect
-
Environmental instability may distort perception
-
Cannot detect fully suppressed/perfectly concealed auras
-
At lower levels
-
Provides only impressions of an aura, not detailed information
-
Limited range and clarity
-
Aura Stabilisation
Also known as: Aura Reinforcement or Mana Shielding
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Recommended Level: Student
A defensive technique that reinforces the cohesion of the caster’s aura, allowing it to resist external interference, disruption, or forced resonance. By stabilising the flow and balance of their mana, the caster prevents unwanted influence from other mana fields.
This technique is commonly used to counteract effects that rely on aura interaction, such as forced resonance, suppression attempts, or destabilizing influences. A well-stabilised aura maintains its integrity even under pressure, reducing susceptibility to manipulation or disruption.
Stabilisation requires continuous awareness and fine control over one’s own mana. The caster must actively maintain equilibrium within their aura, countering external forces without overcompensating, which could lead to rigidity or internal imbalance.
The strength of the technique depends on both the caster’s mana reserves and their control. While it can significantly reduce external influence, it does not make the aura immutable. Sufficiently strong or persistent interference may still overwhelm it.
Limitations:
-
Requires sustained focus and precise control
-
Cannot fully prevent all forms of interference
-
High mana demand during prolonged or intense use
-
Overcorrection may lead to internal instability or rigidity
-
Less effective against significantly stronger mana fields
Aura Suppression
Also known as: Aura Concealment or Mana Veiling
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Recommended Level: Student (advanced)
A technique used to reduce or conceal the presence of one’s own aura by dampening its outward expression. The caster restricts the flow and resonance of their mana to keep it as close to their body as possible, minimizing the disturbances it causes in the ambient mana and making detection through aura-based perception more difficult.
Basic application allows the caster to lessen the intensity of their presence, blending subtle fluctuations into the natural movement of surrounding mana. More advanced use enables near-complete concealment, masking irregularities and reducing the likelihood of recognition even by trained observers.
Suppression does not remove the aura, but compresses and stabilises it within the body. This requires steady control! Fluctuations in focus, emotional state, or mana flow may cause the aura to spike and reveal the caster’s presence. Actively casting spells while aura suppression is active requires immense focus in order to not reveal one's full aura and is therefore quite challenging.
The effectiveness of this technique depends on the caster’s control and the sensitivity of the observer. Stronger or more active mana flows are inherently more difficult to suppress, and prolonged use may strain the caster’s internal balance.
Limitations:
-
Cannot eliminate the aura, only reduce or mask its disturbances
-
Easily broken by loss of focus or emotional fluctuation
-
Less effective against highly sensitive or trained observers
-
Prolonged use may strain or destabilize mana flow
-
Any active use of magic will reveal the caster’s presence
Aura Talk
Also known as: Lesser Telepathy or Mana Speech
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Recommended Level: Student (advanced)
An application most commonly seen in skilled mages with advanced mana reserves, and more frequently among demonkin and faekin, who are born with greater innate capacity.
This technique enables the direct exchange of thoughts, impressions, or intent by aligning two personal mana fields. The caster establishes a temporary resonance between their own aura and that of a nearby recipient, allowing information to pass along the shared mana field.
Telepathy of this type does not read, probe, or alter thoughts. Communication occurs only through deliberate projection and reception of consciously formed concepts, emotions, or intent carried within the caster’s mana. Only what is actively sent can be received. The recipient must possess an active, living mana field; unconscious, dead, or magically inert beings cannot be reached.
This form of telepathy is limited to short distances. Maximum range depends on the caster’s mana reserves and field strength; beyond this threshold, resonance weakens and collapses. Rapid movement, environmental interference, or unstable mana flow may disrupt the connection. Sustained communication requires continuous focus and alignment—if either party withdraws or loses concentration, the exchange ends immediately. Long-distance communication is not possible through this method.
Between individuals deeply familiar with one another’s mana—such as bonded companions, close family, or long-term partners—resonance forms more easily and may extend slightly farther. This does not remove range limitations but improves stability and reduces resistance.
Limitations:
-
Cannot intrude upon thoughts or extract information
-
Cannot function across great distances
-
Cannot be imbued as an enchantment
-
Cannot affect unwilling or shielded recipients
Pre-elemental/lesser telepathy is often mistaken for true telepathy. In reality, it is a refined form of mana interaction—an exchange of living energy and thus not a manipulation of the mind.
Levitation
Also known as: Weight Suspension or Mana Counterbalance
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Recommended Level: Novice
Levitation is the application of Mana Interaction to suspend an object in space by counteracting its natural weight. The caster projects a measured portion of their own mana to balance the gravitational force acting on the object, allowing it to hover in place without physical support.
This technique does not produce directional movement; the object remains stationary unless pushed, pulled, or otherwise acted upon. Levitation’s primary purpose is stability and suspension rather than transport.
Control depends on precision and mana flow. Larger or heavier objects require proportionally more mana, and maintaining the effect demands sustained focus. Loss of concentration or depletion of mana causes the object to fall naturally under gravity.
Common applications include hovering tools or equipment, aiding flight or stabilizing materials during work. Because the technique relies solely on the caster’s mana and not the target’s, it is one of the simplest Mana Interaction skills and can often be learned without formal instruction, even through self-teaching.
Limitations:
-
Levitation does not provide directional movement
-
Effectiveness decreases as object mass increases
-
Continuous focus is required; disruption causes immediate failure
-
Multiple objects must be balanced individually or through expanded aura control
Telekinesis
Also known as: Telekinetic Guidance, or Force Projection
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Recommended Level: Novice
Telekinesis is the manipulation of objects in space through the controlled application of mana. By extending one’s mana field to interact with an object, the caster directs it along a chosen path, controlling speed, orientation, and trajectory.
The mana applied must match the object’s weight and resistance. Multiple objects can be manipulated simultaneously, with the number of objects limited primarily by the caster’s capacity for concentration and multitasking. Fine movements, such as writing or adjusting small tools, require careful focus.
Continuous concentration is necessary; lapses may cause objects to drop, veer off course, or halt unexpectedly.
Telekinesis is among the simplest magical feats to learn—so intuitive, in fact, that it can be discovered without guidance, often appearing in small children before they can speak properly.
Limitations:
-
Requires sustained focus; distractions disrupt control
-
Mana cost increases with object mass, number of objects, and complexity of movement
-
Objects that are heavily anchored, magically bound, or exceptionally resistant may exceed the caster’s capacity
Levitation vs. Telekinesis
Levitation and telekinesis are related uses of Mana Interaction, but they serve different purposes. This section clarifies their separate functions and the practical differences between them.
Distinctions
-
Levitation neutralizes or counteracts weight — Telekinesis applies directional force
-
Levitation maintains position — Telekinesis imparts motion
-
The two are often combined in advanced applications: levitation stabilizes a target while telekinesis directs its movement.
Common Confusion
Novices may mistake levitation for full telekinetic control. In practice, an object may float perfectly while remaining motionless until acted upon by telekinetic force.
True Name Calling
Also known as: Namebinding or Aura Seizure
Classification: Pre-Elemental Magic
Recommended Level: Student
True Name Calling is a practice that allows a being of superior mana density to seize direct control of another’s aura by invoking their true name. A true name is not a spoken label, but the intrinsic name bound to an individual’s identity and mana structure. When spoken with intent, it forces the target’s mana field to respond reflexively.
When the caller’s mana reserves vastly exceed those of the target, the invoked name creates a powerful attraction between their auras. The weaker aura is drawn into the stronger one, resulting in a temporary merging of mana fields. During this convergence, the caller may directly command the target’s mana flow. Because a living body acts in accordance with its mana, this control manifests as full puppeteering: movement, spellcasting, and physical resistance may all be overridden.
The effect is not permanent. Control persists only while the caller actively maintains the resonance. Once released, the auras separate immediately, and no lingering command remains.
True Name Calling cannot be performed between individuals of the same kindred. Among faekin or demonkin, mana reserves are too closely matched for a true name to establish dominance, rendering the practice ineffective. However, faekin and demonkin possess far denser and less diffuse mana than rootkin or chimeras. This disparity allows them to invoke True Name Calling reliably upon those with inferior mana reserves to their own, provided the true name is known.
The knowledge of a true name is both rare and dangerous. Names may shift over time as identity changes, and an incorrect or outdated name will fail to establish resonance.
Limitations:
-
Requires a significant disparity in mana reserves
-
Effects are temporary and collapse once resonance breaks
-
Does not alter thoughts, memories, or identity
-
Knowledge of a true name is required
True Name Calling is among the most feared pre-elemental practices, and this fear has long shaped how faekin are regarded by other kindred.
