Earth magic focuses on shaping, moving, and reinforcing solid matter through the caster’s mana. It governs stone, soil, sand, and metal-bearing ground, allowing the mage to shift terrain, raise barriers, or alter the structure of the land itself. Compared to other elements, earth is resistant to sudden change; moving or reshaping large masses demands steady mana and sustained effort to overcome the element’s natural inertia.

Beyond stone and soil, earth magic also governs growth rooted in the land. Mages can encourage plants to sprout, strengthen, or entwine by guiding the nutrients and vitality within the ground. While this can accelerate natural growth, it cannot create life from nothing—plants must already exist or be able to grow in the surrounding soil.

An earth mage channels magic through stability and resolve, grounding their focus as they guide the weight and structure of the material they command. Careful control allows them to shape stone with precision or direct plant growth with deliberate intent. Impatience or excessive force, however, can cause fractures, uncontrolled overgrowth, or destabilised terrain.

Earth

Summary

Dampening

Affinity: None

Recommended Level: Student*

The spell suppresses sound by manipulating vibrations within solid matter. By drawing the kinetic energy of sound into walls, floors, ceilings, or nearby objects, the caster prevents it from reaching listeners. It works by redirecting or absorbing the energy of sound waves within the affected surfaces, muffling noise before it escapes into open space.

When cast, footsteps, dropped objects, rattling doors, or other disturbances are muted as if absorbed by the surrounding structures. Unlike air-based silencing, which acts directly on sound itself, this spell relies on the interaction between sound and solid surfaces. It can prevent sound from passing through walls or floors but does not stop noise from occurring within a room itself.

Common uses:

  • Creating quiet spaces for study or rest by muffling noise traveling through furniture, floors, or walls

  • Damping machinery or heavy work environments

  • Reducing disturbance in shared living spaces or crowded areas

  • Preventing accidental noise from alerting nearby individuals

Notable drawbacks:

  • Limited effectiveness in open areas lacking sufficient solid surfaces

  • Cannot stop airborne sound traveling freely within the affected room

  • Loud or forceful noises may overwhelm the spell

  • Requires sustained concentration to maintain full suppression

*At student level, the spell is most effective in small or enclosed areas and may struggle with multiple simultaneous noise sources. Larger or more complex environments require advanced practice.

Mire Step

Also known as: Mirestride, Mud Step, Marshwalk

Affinity: None

Secondary: Water

Recommended Level: Arcanist

A combined earth and water manipulation spell that allows the caster to traverse muddy or unstable terrain without sinking. By combining earth-aspected mana to reinforce the structure of the soil with water-aspected mana to control the movement of moisture within it, the caster temporarily stabilises the ground beneath them.

The caster reinforces the particles within the soil while regulating the surrounding moisture, preventing the ground from shifting or collapsing beneath their weight. The spell continuously adjusts the immediate point of contact as the caster moves, rather than altering the entire area.

Mire Step requires precise control over both elemental aspects simultaneously. An imbalance between the two may reduce its effectiveness: insufficient earth influence leaves the terrain unstable, while insufficient water influence may cause the ground to become unnecessarily rigid and require excessive mana to maintain. The spell must be continuously adjusted as the terrain changes beneath the caster.

The spell performs best on shallow mud, marshland, and waterlogged soil with an existing solid structure. Deep bogs, flooded terrain, or areas consisting primarily of loose sediment require significantly greater control, as the caster must stabilise a larger volume of earth and regulate more moisture. Attempting to simply freeze the surrounding terrain or dry it completely is generally more mana-intensive than maintaining the balanced structure created by this spell.

Like other Step spells, Mire Step requires continuous adjustment and is therefore difficult to imbue as an enchantment. An enchanted version must independently detect each step, stabilise the terrain beneath the point of contact while it supports the caster's weight, and release the effect again as the weight shifts. The continuous evaluation and adaptation required make such enchantments considerably more complex than the spell itself.

Common uses:

  • Crossing marshes, swamps, and muddy terrain

  • Traversing flooded or waterlogged areas

  • Travelling through unstable ground without slowing movement

  • Supporting expeditions through environments where ordinary footing is unreliable

Notable drawbacks:

  • Requires access to both earth and water manipulation

  • Requires continuous mana control over two elemental aspects simultaneously

  • Ineffective on terrain with little solid structure to reinforce

  • Deep mud or heavily flooded ground requires significantly more mana

  • Sudden changes in terrain may disrupt the balance between earth and water aspects

  • Heavy weight increases the amount of terrain that must be stabilised

Rootbind

Also known as: Vinesnare

Affinity: None

Recommended Level: Student

A conjuration-based earth spell that forms roots or vines directly from the caster’s mana, causing them to emerge from the ground and entwine around a target. Unlike manipulation-based plant spells, Rootbind does not rely on existing vegetation. Instead, the caster shapes earth-aspected mana into temporary plant matter that behaves like living roots.

Once conjured, the vines rapidly coil and tighten according to the caster’s intent, forming a restraint around the target. Because the structure is sustained by mana rather than natural growth, it can appear even in areas where plant life is sparse or absent, provided there is soil or loose ground through which the vines can emerge.

Maintaining the bind requires a continuous flow of mana. As long as the caster sustains the spell, the vines remain flexible and responsive, allowing the restraint to tighten or shift. When the mana flow ceases, the conjured roots quickly wither and crumble back into inert earth.

The spell demands careful control over shape and density. Weak construction results in fragile vines that snap under resistance, while excessive mana may produce unstable growth that lashes unpredictably.

Common uses: to restrain opponents, halt movement, capture fleeing targets, or block narrow paths with conjured vegetation.

Notable drawbacks:

  • Requires continuous mana to sustain the conjured vines

  • Construct dissolves shortly after the caster stops channeling

  • Fragile if insufficient mana or poor shaping is applied

  • Cannot form effectively on bare stone or solid surfaces

  • Strong or large targets may break the restraint

  • Loss of concentration may cause the bind to loosen or collapse

Sand Step

Also known as: Sandstride

Affinity: None

Recommended Level: Student*

An earth manipulation spell that allows the caster to move across loose sand without sinking. By channeling earth-aspected mana into the sand beneath them, the caster temporarily increases the binding between individual grains, allowing the surface to support their weight.

The spell functions by binding the uppermost layer of sand into a more stable structure beneath each step. The caster continuously adjusts the arrangement of the grains as their weight shifts, creating a temporary path of stable footing that dissipates once a step lifts. It does not permanently alter the terrain.

Sand Step requires continuous mana control while in use. If the caster stops channelling or loses control, the reinforced structure disperses and the sand returns to its natural state. Sudden movements or uneven distribution of weight may disrupt the binding, causing the caster to lose stability.

The spell performs best on dry, even terrain where the sand remains relatively stable and predictable. Slopes, dunes, or areas with constantly shifting sand require significantly greater control, as the caster must reinforce a larger area to prevent the surrounding sand from shifting beneath the supported surface.

Like Snow Step, the spell requires continuous adjustment and is therefore difficult to imbue as an enchantment. An enchanted version must independently detect each step, reinforce only the sand beneath the point of contact while it bears the caster's weight, and release the effect again as the weight shifts. The continuous evaluation and adaptation required make such enchantments considerably more complex than the spell itself.

Common uses:

  • Crossing deserts or loose sandy terrain

  • Traversing dunes or unstable ground

  • Reducing exhaustion caused by sinking sand during travel

  • Moving safely across areas where ordinary footing is unreliable

Notable drawbacks:

  • Requires continuous mana input to maintain the reinforced sand structure

  • Loss of concentration causes the sand to lose stability immediately

  • Loose or unstable sand requires greater mana expenditure to reinforce

  • Less effective on rapidly shifting dunes or loose, dry sand

  • Strong winds may disrupt the caster's control over individual grains

*While the spell itself is considered accessible at Student level, maintaining it without visible effort requires considerable refinement. Many students learn the technique as a means of improving concentration and mana control, but only highly practiced mages can use it instinctively while performing other tasks.
