Light Magic is the stabilising aspect of mana—a force that nourishes, strengthens, and preserves. It enhances what already exists, guiding body, mind, and spirit toward harmony and balance. While its physical applications include manipulating light, its essence lies in restoration, purification, and reinforcement.

At its highest level, Light Magic manifests as Blessings—enduring enchantments that infuse a target with stabilising or strengthening power. These are complex workings requiring immense control and intent, often bound to living beings, artifacts, or places.

Though generally constructive, Light Magic is not inherently benevolent. When misused, it can force unnatural growth, preserve what should decay, or overwhelm through excess vitality and brilliance. Stability, when taken too far, becomes its own form of distortion.

Summary

Acuity

Element: None

Recommended Level: Novice

Acuity is the art of enhancing natural perception by channeling light-aspected mana to strengthen the senses. The spell heightens visual, auditory, or tactile awareness, allowing the caster to detect finer details, subtle movements, or faint stimuli that would otherwise go unnoticed. Unlike elemental manipulation, the spell does not alter the environment itself but amplifies the body’s ability to interpret sensory information.

Effectiveness scales with the caster’s skill and concentration. Light mana is drawn into the relevant sense, temporarily increasing sensitivity, focus, and discernment.

The spell requires focus on the desired sense. Overextending acuity may lead to sensory overload or fatigue if the caster attempts to enhance multiple senses simultaneously or maintain the effect for prolonged periods.

Limitations:

  • Requires conscious focus

    • distraction reduces effectiveness

  • Sustained use can cause sensory strain or mental fatigue

  • Amplifies only the natural function of the senses and cannot grant perception beyond physical limits (e.g., true night vision without ambient light)

Astral Wings

Element: Air

Recommended Level: Arcanist

A flight spell that combines light and air magic to generate lift and directional control similar to that of physical wings. The term “astral” stems from Koruna, where it was first recorded as an official spell, as the term astral is often used synonymous with the term light in that area.

The spell's effect itself is solely visual and thus non-corporeal—the wings are formed from light-aspected mana and condensed air currents rather than solid matter.

When manifested, the wings appear as luminous mirages: translucent, shimmering structures that bend light like heat haze. Their form is mutable, taking on whatever visual shape the caster imagines.

The wings function by manipulating air pressure and flow around the caster, allowing true aerial movement rather than simple levitation. Efficiency and stability depend on the caster’s control of both light and air; imbalance between the two can cause erratic lift or loss of form.

Constellation Summoning

Element: Air

Recommended Level: Arcanist

Constellation summoning is a demanding and exacting art, suitable only for mages with advanced magical discipline and significant mana reserves. It involves calling a stellar entity from the night sky into Mereldia by recreating the precise pattern of its constellation through magic.

Each constellation is a true being, possessed of awareness, will, and temperament. The reason these celestial forms carry souls remains unknown. What is known is that summoning does not create them—it invites them. Compliance is never guaranteed.

To summon a constellation, its stellar pattern must be laid with magic. Most practitioners employ structured summoning circles for precision and stability, though any method capable of accurately reproducing the constellation’s form is theoretically viable. Imperfect renderings may result in unstable manifestations or failed summons.

Once present, a constellation acts according to its own nature. Some are cooperative, others aloof or mischievous, and a few are openly hostile. A summoner does not command a constellation; at best, they negotiate its cooperation.

Maintaining a summon places continuous strain on the caster’s mana. Prolonged summoning is strongly discouraged. Exhaustion, loss of consciousness, and death are all documented consequences of overextension.

There are eighty-eight known constellations. Their summoning difficulty increases with the number of stars they possess, as each star must be sustained by the caster’s mana. The most complex constellations have not been successfully summoned in decades. In such cases, success is defined solely by the summoner’s survival.

Invisibility

Element: None

Recommended Level: Arcanist

Invisibility cast with light affinity is a spell that renders a creature or object visually unseen by bending and redirecting light around it. The spell alters how light behaves at its surface, causing it to pass around the target without reflecting toward an observer’s eyes.

Invisibility counts as a subtype of glamour magic, and as such also has a dark counterpart. The light-based invisibility, however, only affects perception through physical means. The target remains fully present—capable of interacting with the environment, casting spells, and being detected through sound, scent, touch, or magical senses. Only visual perception is suppressed.

The effectiveness of invisibility depends on the mana invested and the caster’s control. Weak invisibility may distort outlines, shimmer under movement, or fail under sudden lighting changes. Strong, well-maintained invisibility can fully erase visual presence but requires continuous mana flow and focus.

Invisibility is commonly used for concealment, evasion, or surveillance. It can also be imbued into conduits as an enchantment, though enchanted invisibility is always temporary and degrades as its stored mana dissipates. Once the spell collapses, light resumes normal behaviour and the target becomes visible immediately.

Common uses: concealment, evasion, surveillance, etc.

Notable drawbacks:

  • The caster (when the spell is cast on oneself) cannot see their own body, limbs, or equipment while the spell is active.

  • Fine motor actions become harder without training, especially tasks that rely on visual feedback.

  • Looking into mirrors, reflective surfaces, or water shows empty space.

  • Self-targeted invisibility is disorienting at first and requires practice to use effectively.

Sleep

Element: None

Recommended Level: Luminary (medical grade)

This spell induces sleep by subtly strengthening the body’s natural production of sleep-regulating hormones. The caster must maintain precise control to ensure hormone levels are balanced, as improper application may lead to restlessness, physiological strain, or severe complications.

The effect can be gradual, easing the subject into rest, or more immediate when carefully calibrated. The caster’s focus is essential to sustain the spell until sleep is achieved.

Common uses:

  • Administered in clinical or magical medical settings to treat sleep disorders

  • Supporting recovery after illness or injury

  • Helping individuals achieve rest when natural sleep is difficult

Notable drawbacks:

  • Misapplication can overstimulate or suppress hormone production, causing serious health issues

  • Requires continuous monitoring of the subject’s physiological and magical state

  • Not suitable for casual or recreational use

  • Should only be performed by trained medical professionals familiar with light-affinity physiology

  • Can induce coma
