Submontane of Cailleach, the grande mountain border, lays the city of Nordberg. It was founded at about the same time as Monabur, but is double as big as the capital city of Koruna. There are six gods of the first generation who are guarding the city. If they are present, they can often be found in the cathedral, which is in the middle of the city. In the city there also are six main species which each have a royal family ruling them. The gryphons, the wolves, the owls, the horses, the deer and the felines. The kings each have a castle in one of the districts, when then also is the district where they respective species is found most often.

Nordberg is known for its good schools, especially the Magic Academies. Many move there to study magic or other arts, since Nordberg is full of opportunities, especially for mages. The forests surrounding the city are full of game for hunters, as well as some dangerous monsters, even of the fae kin. Mages are often commissioned to fight and slay them. Some parts of their bodies can be used for potions, especially for medicine so that a big market has formed out of selling those ingredients.

The Library in Nordberg is known all over Mereldia as the biggest library that exists. There even is a saying that mentions it: "To read in Nordberg's books." It is used when people are being smart-alecky. Some of the books in The Grande Library even are from human age. No one can read the old runes though, not even the first gods, or even know about humans to begin with. If they are mentioned at all, they are just refered to "the ancient ones".

All of the different species in Nordberg live in peace together and do have friendly everyday interactions. Of course there is the one or other racist person around, but  they are not that common. Though it can be said that gryphons probably are the most racist species from all the kinds living in Nordberg for it is in their nature to feel proud and superior to others.

From looks Nordberg is very similar to a big European City of the 13th or 14th century. The buildings are made of stone, but only few have more than one floor or more than five rooms. The families are big and live together in a small space. Only the High Society can afford bigger houses. The Low and Middle Class are usually happy with what they have though.

Mentality

The people in Nordberg do not regard weird looking crossbreeds as offscourings, as the people in Koruna do, but as normal people. It is completely normal to run across them so almost no one is racist towards them. The people in Nordberg have learned to live with the weird occurences in the surrounding area. Fae creatures roam it, monsters are a frequent encounter and weird seightings are on the day norm. Overall the mentality of the citenzens of Nordberg and also of the ones living in the city's surrounding area, can be compared to the mentality of people in medieval age of the 13th or 14th century. They are quite superstitious, live a more dangerous life, are happy without much, have big families, are not as shy/inhibited as we are today and death is a daily occurence. Many illnesses are plaguing the land, many groups of criminals are slaughtering off wanderers in the forest, many fall prey to predators and monsters. The times are dangerous and hard, but the people are used to it.

History

When the times were most wicked and the people most starved, the grande saviors arrived. They, who were holy creatures descended from Avalon, had come to save those that were left from the slaughter and sorrow. The grande war of destruction was over and initiated was the rebith of Mereldia. For this rebirth, we were the chosen ones who should start this new age. In the female folk's wombs, our offspring shall grow, for our children will be the first generation born in this new and glorious age.

No grudges were held, even when we were of different kinds and came from different lives and lands. The saviors brought us all together and this is how it shall be. They built us shelter in what the ancients left us and gave us food in a land of cold and snow.

The gryphons were the first burden to take. They had been here long before us and claimed the land by the name of Sraderham as theirs. They did not share what they owned and basked in their own gloriful pride. They did not need to be saved, so they looked down on us, who were nothing but refugees lead by the most glorious six creatures in existence. It was then, that those very same gods declared themselves to be our guardians and that we should henceforth refer to them as such. And so we did.

A border was drawn between our land and Sraderham. While the guardians argued that borders were the reason that lead to the grande war of destruction, they also agreed that there was no way to appease the gryphons otherwise. Our land, then was Nordberg, called that after the grande mountain in the north that even lay beyond Cailleach, the impassable mountain border. This mountain, that was grander than all, reaching into the sky, was the Nordberg, called so in olden times. The guardians called our land so, to let it become just as grande as that glorious mountain in the north.

Monsters, beasts left from the war or even before that native to this land, were roaming these grounds. They killed young and old, not concerned who it was they slaughtered. To protect us from them, the guardians built walls around our land, keeping the evil out and the good in. The gryphons, who had been too proud to build walls to secure themselves, benefited from this and so, some of them decided to move to our land, to live in safety.

I took my child and fled from it

The times of darkest war,

Nobody's fault it was at first,

And safe was Parandor

We fought in war, but yet did not,

To keep our children living,

But then it ended and they came,

To show the gift of giving

Abandoning our pride

It was no way to go,

But foolish ones did fly and flee,

And forth fell the white snow

The pride of Sraderham,

Was shrinking more and more,

Not even he knew what to do,

The king of Parandor

Those beasts of south, declared gods,

How dared they take control!

But our kin listened to them not him,

We payed a heavy toll

Eventually it came to this,

having to surrender.

Adjusting to the city life,

From hunter to a vendor

Greneth we kept and also,

The proud pride Sraderham.

But the king of Parandor,

Now fragile like a lamb

Our feathers we showed proudly,

For they kept us warm,

Unlike those other fools,

Who wore cloaks in the storm

And so it came and went,

To Nordberg we had moved

And while safe from the shee,

We still disapproved

Nordberg is one of the very few cities that still stands from human age. Magic that lingered there from the destructive war of black magic had protected it to fall apart completly.

When the war of the gods had come to an end, many mortals wandered to the ruins of the old city to find shelter. Their own lands had been destroyed and their leaders were dead. Six gods then took it upon themselves to watch over those helpless souls. Together they rebuilt the city to create more shelter from the freezing cold, and they also started to grow food in the surrounding areas.

With time, six races started to dominate the population of the city. The deer, the horses, the wolves, the owls the felines and the gryphons, who had lived in Nordberg even before the war.

To avoid fights between the dominat species, the gods, that still guarded the city, chose one leader from each species. Those five kings, together with the gryphon king of Parandor, from then on ruled Nordberg, while the gods kept protecting the city. Five castles at the edges of town were built, while the holy cathedral, that still remained from human age, was used by the six gods as a place to rest. Apart from being a home to the six guardians of Nordberg, the Cathedral also is a place to speak prayers.

Gods

The six guardians of Nordberg are regarded as gods and are prayed to by those that read and believe in "The Keeper Scrolls". They are seen as saviors by those and therefore are holy. The six gods would be:

Aylinn | cervine - light

Nexus | avian - darkness

Vesta | reptilian - fire

Jafar | canine - water

Isolde | feline - air

Damek | equine - earth

Royal Families

The royal families are those who live in the six castles of Nordberg and rule their respective city district. For the most important decisions, that concern all of Nordberg, the kings assemble in a building in the Middle District, together with one of the guardians, so make their decisions.

Every royal family is different from the normal folk in some way, shape or form, mostly concerning their appearance.

Elden – Perython (winged deer)

Brackhill – descendants of Tianma, the celestial horse (no visual difference to common horses)

Almerry – Maltese tiger (rare coloring)

Aysel - Giant Short-Eared Owl (are bigger than common Short-Eared Owls)

Dorgoil - Black Polar Wolves (features of Polar Wolves, but with black fur instead of white)

Sraderham - no special features | the gryphons are the only exception since, unlike the other species, they have already ruled before the guardians came.

Due to their special looks  (except horses and gryphons) the royal families are easily recognizable, though of course similarities always happen, especially in Elden, where Perythons also exist outside of the Royal Family (those are usually Nobles).

High Society

People of noble heritage or just those that are wealthy enough to be able to afford a very luxorious life style, are regarded as High Society. Also those that are empolyed at a royal castle as guards and soldiers count to that class.

Middle Class

Vendors, bakers, blacksmiths, artists. All of them and more belong to the middle class. Sometimes it even is just a thin line between it and the High Society or even the Low Society respectively. The Middle Class also makes up most of the population of Nordberg.

Low Society

Those without occupation, who are too poor and who often call the slums their home, are of the low society. Once born in poverty it is hard to get out of it, so it is not uncommon that some resort to stealing. But not only thieves, but also other kinds of criminals are regarded lowly.

Offscourings

There is just one class worse than the low society, which are the offscourings. They have no own place to belong and are looked down upon. Usually these are those that practice the dark arts. Witches and Witchers are widely feared and hunted. They are said to be in bound with the Unseelie and find joy in sadistic rituals and eating children. Though most of these things are not true at all, the prejudices still are very strong.

Celebrations

The time in Mereldia is looked at with the Celtic Calendar. The first month of the year is called Samonios, which would be November in our Calendar, and the last one is Cantlos, which would be October in our Calendar.

One month is one moon and every month starts with a full moon, so that no specific months (from our calendar) can be transfered actually.

To make things easier I decided to use our months and to just rename them to their Celtic names and to also set them into the order of the Celtic Lunar Calendar. We already have too much complicated system stuff in this RPG, no need to make complicated stuff even more complicated. Just comply with the calendar below here.

Samhain

The year begins with Samhain. It is said to be a time when the veil between Mereldia and the Otherworld is so thin that the dead could return to warm themselves at the hearths of the living, and some of the living - especially poets - were able to enter the Otherworld through the doorways of the sidhe. It also is associated with going to ground and withdrawing, therefore the beginning of winter.
Samhain is celebrated by lighting lanterns and hanging them in front of their doors. This way the souls of the dead can find their way home and linger around in peace before returning to the world they belong into now. Meanwhile the families go to the graveyard to also light candles there and put flowers on the graves of their beloved and their family. At midnight some claim to see the faint flimmer of a ghost from the dead person they care most about, which just appears for a few seconds. It is not proven if this is a real phenomena or just wish-thinking, but it has claimed to be seen by several different people already.
The celebration takes place on the first day of Samonios, which also is first month of the year.

Winter's Eve

Winter's Eve was brought to Nordberg by a group of immigrants from Koruna and through the centuries it also has become a celebration there. Even though they do not lack ice and snow at all in the cold winter months, they do still treasure the bound of families and the good spirit Winter's Eve is meant to bring forth in everyone. On this day, everyone is at home, feasts and celebrates. Also some presents are made to bring more joy into the cold winter months. When a homeless stranger is to knock on the door, they are to be let in to partake in the feast. Most respect the rules of Winter's Eve and stay good guests, but it also often happens that criminals sneak into a family home this way. Therefore most families are very cautious about who they are able to let in. For that, wealthy people often purchase a magic item and hang it above their doorstep on the inside of the door, so that visitors cannot see it when standing on the door step. It makes it impossible for those close to it to tell a lie and so the family can be sure of the pureness of the visitor's intentions. Most families cannot afford such an item though and therefore either lock their doors or take the risk.

Imbolc

The time in which the lambs are born celebrates the ending of winter and the beginning of spring. When the new lambs are born, and a dish made from their docked tails is eaten in honor of the celebration.Women met to celebrate the return of the maiden aspect of the Goddess' (all six high gods are regarded as female in the North Lands).
The celebration takes place on the first day of Anagantios, which would be 1st of February in our calendar.

Beltain

At the beginning of Giamonios (May) Beltain takes place. It celebrates the abundant fertility of the land, the animals and the people. Cattle are let out of winter quarters and are driven between two fires in a ritual cleansing ceremony. It is a time for feasts and fairs, for the mating of animals, and for divorces - possible arising from trial marriages entered into at Lughnasadh. Like Samhain, it was a time for boardgames - as well as for travel between the worlds.

Lughnasadh

It is a festival marking the beginning of harvest season. The main thing is a solemn cutting of the first corn of which an offering to the gods is made by bringing it up to a high place and burying it. A meal of the new food and of bilberries is made, of which everyone must partake. A sacred bull is sacrificed, a feast of its flesh is held, with some ceremony involving its hide, and its replacement by a young bull. A ritual dance-play and perhaps telling of a struggle for a goddess and a ritual fight.

New Year's Festival

The 31st Cantlos is the last day of the year. The people are celebrating the old year dying and a new year rising.
