Sirens live mostly in the sea, but also deep lakes should be approached with caution. While they are loners, it is under no circumstances recommended losing one’s caution once a siren is passed without incident. They usually follow a lone wanderer without them knowing and then trick them. My advice is to never trust any beautiful stranger women who linger around big waters. Once you see one you better run for your life. Since they are not very fast on land and cannot stay out of water for very long, so they will most likely not pursue to chase you.

When it comes to reproduction, then sirens are very creative. They are, without exception, female and therefore lack a male counterpart to reproduce. Even though that is the case, they still have (mammal) organs that allow them to reproduce with males of other species. The offspring of such connections are called halflings and are half a siren as well as half the species of the father. Those halflings can also be male, but in eighty percent of the cases, they are female as well. When a partner to mate with is absent, sirens lay already fertilised eggs (underwater) and guard them until they hatch. There can be up to twenty of such eggs and the mother is extremely protective of them. Anyone that comes close to the clutch is immediately killed without mercy. After two weeks the sirens hatch and undergo metamorphism stages until they are half-grown sirens with the age of one year. After this year, the mother siren leaves her children, which from then on have to fend for themselves. The sisters usually stay together for some years before eventually separating their ways.

Sirens can be killed with any weapon made out of iron, or by being kept on land for longer than a week in their mammal form. Since they can only change their form while in water it is also possible to drag them out of it in their real form and keep them there. They then will die in the course of a day. Alternatively, it is also possible to burn them or to poison them with iron. Also, plants that contain considerably much iron like for example spirulina are effective ways to poison a siren. Depending on the dose it will not kill but only weaken them. It is recommended to kill them rather than to keep them alive since they can even recover from an iron poisoning.

Since their voice is their strongest magic, it is recommended to cover one’s ears (if possible). Spells that work against a siren’s voice are deafening spells, which should be handled with caution since, without enough skill for them, you could stay deaf forever. Other than that, spells that work against a siren’s voice have not yet been discovered.

The magic that they use to let their voice appear as hypnotising as it is, can be imitated. Some female mages (usually druids) have successfully mastered a similar spell to the one sirens use naturally, which has given them siren voices. It has to be said that the spell is restricted to female mages since also sirens are without exception female and therefore the spell would have to be transformed to also work on male mages. A transformation was so far impossible.

In the year 520 a.w. the spell of the siren voice has been declared forbidden due to it being dark magic and it is, therefore, illegal to use it.

Sirens are creatures that have always been known best for their manipulative nature and their magic to charm about any male being. Due to their carnivorous diet, they usually use this ability to trick unlucky souls into coming close enough to them so that they can pull them down into deep water and drown them. Once dead, they continue to eat the dead body.

You can identify a siren usually by their unnatural beauty and their voice, which is too clear and pure sounding to be from this world. Once in the water, they shift into their true form, which consists of a fish or amphibian tail (they come in many variations), usually with a huge fin to swim extremely fast, and clawed arms behind the actual forelegs, which they can extend and draw back at will. When withdrawn, the arms are below the skin and therefore invisible. Their eyes are usually of a rainbow of colours, like those of fish, but in a sentient form. As it is common for most fae, they come in many different variations of species. Mostly they resemble a ground-bound mammal of at least 4 hands of size. Equines and cervines are most common.
